The researcher of the Department of Traumatology of San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia, Enrique Martinez has been one of the participants of the study that has been carried out during the World Swimming held in Barcelona between 20 July and 4 of August, in which Spain has won twelve medals.
The research, backed and supported by the FINA and the IOC pursues the study of lesions of the swimmers before and after the development of tests for preventive level results.
"Our main goal is to improve the health of our athletes," said Enrique Martinez, a researcher at the Department of Traumatology of the UCAM, which has been a member of an international study on prevention of injuries that has taken place during the Championship Swimming World.
The research, part of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) and is supported and endorsed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), consisted of a collection of data "to identify previous injuries" that had swimmers before the start of World as well as "in-depth knowledge which occur during the same".
With these partial results in hand, the researchers seek to establish a set of parameters to effectively prevent the most common physical problems in these athletes.
"We have succeeded in studying previous injuries involved about 50% of the swimmers. During World development, 80%," says Enrique.
The twelve medals won by Spain at the World Championships, four of them by Mireia Belmonte and Melani Costa, swimmers and University students, demonstrate the fitness of athletes in our country, something that surprised Enrique Martinez: "Spain is one of the least lesions showed delegations to arrive, which speaks highly of the quality of our national health service, which takes good care of the athletes."
While UCAM researcher notes that it is too early to advance conclusions was that "major injuries in swimming are produced by overloading on one shoulder, and waterpolo for bruises and small fractures."
