The family of animals and animal nature park Terra Natura Murcia has five new members with the birth on the premises of several painted gray pups (Numida meleagris) which took place a few days ago.
With this addition the family of this species, also known as guinea fowl, is extended to six adults and five pups.
Births have been produced by incubator "to protect the eggs of some predatory birds that otherwise they would have been used as food," as explained by the park keepers.
This situation is aggravated by the habit of this species to lay their nests on the ground and not in trees, where they would be better protected, which facilitates the opportunity for other birds that eat the eggs if workers do not detect its presence.
The gray painted usually put about a dozen eggs in each pregnancy, a process that takes about 21 to 23 days.
These animals belong to the African gallinaceous species.
His stories often measure around 50 centimeters, highlighted by a blue-gray color with white spots all over the body and have a very characteristic small bump on the head.
The diet of infants is based on crushed grain feed and subsequently, when they reach adulthood, may supplement these foods with small insects or worms.
The pups will be under the care of veterinarians of the park for 30 days, until they pass to live on campus with other members of their species.
