The Governing Council has declared a Cultural the image of Our Lady Saint Mary of the Arrixaca, located in the chapel of St. Mary of the Arrixaca of the Church of San Andrés, in Murcia.
The image of the Virgen de la Arrixaca, former patron of the town, is a seated carving dating from the thirteenth century by an anonymous author.
Derived from Byzantine iconography, the image was made in walnut wood, painted and gilded with fine gold water.
St. Mary of the Arrixaca was patron of Murcia until 1731, when he was succeeded by the Virgin of Fuensanta current patron.
Since then, the image was losing popular favor, until in 1885 it was returned to worship in the chapel of the Church of St. Andrew by the Royal and Ancient Brotherhood of Devotees of St. Mary of the Arrixaca, custodians of the image .
