The city of Murcia has performed in Manchester planned actions to increase public transport use acting on intermodality.
This measure will allow travelers who live some distance from public transport links, can be reached by bicycle, let stored in a locked bicycle parking with surveillance and security systems, and then make use of the public transport network.
Another initiative is aimed at improving traffic signaling several roundabouts of the city, in order to make drivers more aware of the vehicles, the presence of cyclists on the road, in order to reduce the speed and increase precautions.
The Department of Traffic and Transportation is working on the development of web tools that enable citizens to know the optimal routes between point of origin and destination, combining several bus lines or even different means of transport.
Also, the municipal officers at the meeting presented an innovative application of ICTs for local governance and management.
The measure involves an experience of 8 months during which they crawled through a Smartphone App designed ad-hoc, the routes taken by more than 250 volunteers, daily bike users, in order to optimize signaling and configuration traffic on roads highly traveled by them.
The beginning of the pilot phase is scheduled in October 2013.
The project MOBISEC, Mobility Initiatives European Sustainable communities, is designed and led by the city of Murcia.
Also involved in this project the European cities of Varna (Bulgaria) and Oldham (United Kingdom).
The project has a total budget of 1,271,000 euros and is funded by 50% by the Directorate General for Transport of the European Commission.
