The Governing Council has approved a proposal from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the statement as a Cultural (BIC) to category Paleontological Area, the site of the Puerto de la Cadena, in Murcia.
The purpose is to protect and preserve the paleontological heritage that exists in this setting, in which there is a large accumulation of fossil vertebrates and paleobotanical remains.
It is located eight miles southwest of the city of Murcia and 2.5 kilometers south of the hamlet of El Palmar.
Its rich paleontological dating back 23 million years, placing it among the richest in terms of vertebrate sites of the Iberian Peninsula.
Among the remains are two defenses that houses a mastodon in excellent state of preservation, and a giant turtle shell is well preserved, and whose presence is scarce jiráfido in Spanish fields, and will help to complete knowledge on the evolution group in the Iberian Peninsula.
So, this is a paleontological site stands out for its paleodiversidad vertebrate groups and the state of preservation of the fossils, as well as being a unique paleobotanical site in the Region of Murcia.
