The contribution of the Church in serving the poor and homeless in the Kingdom of Murcia during the first half of the eighteenth century has been highlighted by the doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Arts by Jose Antonio Fernandez Palazón.
The study, which was led by Professor Antonio Irigoyen, discusses the measures that various institutions, both ecclesiastical and civil, adopted at that time to address the social problem of homelessness, which affected most of the commoners.
"The charity says the research work was initially in force in Spanish society of the old regime and allowed the poor came, most of the initiatives came from the ecclesiastical field."
Notes the thesis that "the cathedral chapter, the diocese or religious orders put part of their income to service the needy, but also the council and individuals contributed to attempt that would improve situation of many people."
However, the study concludes that "it was found that, despite everything, rents were aimed a fraction of what could have been used".
The dissertation of José Antonio Fernández Palazón has been rated as suitable cum laude.
