A group of researchers at the Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Murcia have made biodiesel fuel from refined oil processing soybean, olive and jatropha oils jojoba and sunflower and olive.
The aim of the project, begun in 2012, is to harness waste oils produced by the various departments of the University, as cafeterias and canteens, and use low-quality vegetable oils for biodiesel production low cost.
The researcher Pilar Olivares says the University of Murcia is the first Spanish and one of the few in the world to use low cost oils and supercritical conditions for the production of biodiesel.
The recovery of waste oils for energy is beneficial to the environment because they pollute the water and soil, and air, in this case when burned, releasing CO2, heavy metals and toxic substances.
The research group, which consists of teachers and students of the University of Murcia and Cartagena Polytechnic, receives international collaboration of the University of Chile and the University of Technology in Delhi.
