IU-Greens expressed their rejection to criminalize victims of prostitution (09/04/2013)

The IU-Greens spokesman in the city of Murcia, Esther Herguedas, today expressed their opposition to the ordinance on street prostitution in holding that "penalizes and punishes" women who exercise, who, in his opinion, "should be treated as victims and not as perpetrators."

Herguedas regretted that the government team "address this issue as a matter of public policy renouncing the social treatment", and pointed out that ordinances of this nature applied in other municipalities "have done little to end prostitution in the street the limited deterrent effect and in most cases people fall on insolvent ".

The mayor pointed out that the experience in implementing such ordinances suggests that far from solving the problem, all that has been achieved is to move to areas where women are most vulnerable because they operate local networks operating .

"While women in prostitution public space disappear, sexual exploitation networks and grow alternate premises," he added.

In his opinion, the problem of prostitution in the neighborhood of El Carmen "is the result of the precarious situation in which many families find themselves in an area that supports the highest unemployment rate of the municipality."

Herguedas is convinced that many of the women engaged in prostitution in the neighborhood could get out of it if you would give them more than reintegration activities to avoid fines and if they had a job with which to bring up their children.

"The marginalization and poverty are not resolved with fines," he concluded.
