The doctoral thesis at the University of Murcia by Antonio Perez Manzano revealed in its conclusions overall worsening perception of science by young children and after passing through secondary education.
The research highlights negative classroom teaching strategies in science classes, mainly focusing on the teacher's explanations and implementation problems, with little activity laboratory or scientific site visits.
The work, a national sample of more than 7,000 primary and secondary students, is set to the largest study to date in Spain on the perception of science by children and youth.
The most important results show little interest in research as a career option, especially in girls, 'an image of the scientist away from outdated stereotypes (with a strongly positive assessment of its social importance) and increased interest in science in those with fathers or mothers linked to scientific professions.
The thesis was supervised by professors at the University of Murcia Antonio José de Pro Well, Eva Herrera Gutiérrez García and Manuel Ato.
