Murcia brings together representatives from various national biosphere reserve (01/03/2013)

The Department of Environment met yesterday, in the building next to City Hall representatives of different biospheres in Spain Murcia speaking on the benefits to their regions to have these areas.

Under the title 'Experiences of sustainable development into Spanish Biosphere Reserves' and within the various activities that are being developed to raise awareness of the project 'The Owl Country', involved six people related to the biosphere reserves of Sierra de las Nieves (Malaga), Montseny (Barcelona), Somiedo (Asturias), and Nancea Muniellos-sources (Asturias).

The event was presented by the Councillor for the Environment, Adela Martinez Cachá, and attended the Bellarmine Fernandez, Mayor of Somiedo Asturian council was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 2000.

Also participated in the conference Tomás Rueda, President of the Board of Managers of Biosphere Reserves Spanish and Spanish Committee member of the UNESCO MAB program, Miguel Angel Ruiz, a farmer and president of the agricultural cooperative "El Molino de Guaro" the Biosphere Reserve of the Sierra de las Nieves (Malaga), Joan Barber, director of the Biosphere Reserve of the Montseny (Barcelona), Victorino Garcia wood craftsman and tourism entrepreneur of the Association of Rural Tourism in the Reserve Sources Muniellos Biosphere-Narcea (Asturias) and Baldó Luis Garcia, coordinator of the Tourism Product Club of Biosphere Reserves of Asturias.

The Day the guests explained the socio-economic development opportunities associated with international figure Biosphere Reserves and presented examples of activities and economic opportunities in their areas.

The event formed part of the public participation process that the city of Murcia is developing ahead of the preparation of the application to the Unesco Biosphere Reserve of the Sierras and Murcia Golf, Country Owl.

The speakers talked about the importance of having a biosphere reserve and its positive functions for both the conservation of ecosystems, species and landscapes, and for the promotion of economic and human development which is sustainable viewpoint ecologically sustainable.

Biosphere Reserves are areas recognized by UNESCO in the international framework of the program 'People and Biosphere "(MAB), an intergovernmental program that aims to improve the overall relationship of people with their environment, while attempting promote sustainable development based on the effort of the local community and scientific.

The World Network of Biosphere Reserves by UNESCO recognized currently consists of 610 reserves in 117 countries, of which 43 are in Spain, although none in the region of Murcia and in the Mediterranean Levant.

Thus, the Biosphere Reserve of the Sierras and Murcia Golf will make a decisive contribution to the network level Spanish UNESCO world and particularly to the Mediterranean Basin.

Biosphere Reserves are areas with significant natural values ​​where the population has a close relationship with the environment, an interaction that makes it different from the traditional concept of protected space.
