A red beetle infestation has run in recent months with hundreds of palm trees planted in various areas Espinardo campus of the University of Murcia, despite the efforts of the academic authorities to combat it and prevent its devastating effects.
The rides and campus gardens have about 550 copies of date palm and Canary Island date palm, "of which it is estimated that most affected by the red palm weevil," according to the report prepared by the Technical Unit of the educational institution.
The first symptoms were detected in 2008, near Monte Romero Stadium, in the vicinity of the School of Economics, where the plague spread to other places.
The weevil lives and feeds inside the palms, making their presence difficult to detect with the naked eye and effectively combating it.
