Murcia City Council spends more than 200,000 euros a respite service, which currently serves an average of 80 cases per month.
The Governing Board has given its approval to the extension of the service provided by Vesta Home Services, SL 2013.
The Family Respite Service in homes, under the Department of Social Welfare and Health was launched for the first time in the municipality of Murcia in 2002.
At its inception, the service was directed exclusively to elderly dependents, but in 2004 was extended to persons with disabilities.
This service consists of dependent care for a few hours on weekends in order that the usual caregiver can perform other activities.
The attention and care of a dependent person is a prolonged experience required, in many cases, reorganize family life, employment and social integration of people who are in charge of caring.
The service provided by the municipality covers personal care and support needed by the dependent person in the absence of their families (toilet, accompanying walks or cultural activities and entertainment, giving food and drugs, etc..).
In most families is a single person who bears most of the responsibility of care.
Most of these primary caregivers are women: wives, daughters and wives.
So much so that eight out of ten people who are caring for an elderly relative in our country are women between 45 and 65 years old.
Despite the clear predominance of women in the field of care, men are increasingly involved in the care of dependents as well as primary caregivers or helpers of the primary caregivers.
The number of hours and days to provide the service is set according to the needs and preferences of each user and service availability.
