Global Climate Cities "Covenant of Mexico City," a local government commitment as international strategic actors in implementing adaptation and mitigation to climate change.
The agreement was first presented during the World Mayors Summit on Climate (WMSC) held in Mexico City on November 21, 2011, and was then signed by 138 local government authorities in the world, counting, as of today, with 269 adherents from more than 50 different countries.
The relevance of the Covenant of Mexico City is that it has positioned itself as one of the strategic mechanisms of cities to combat climate in a very short time, demonstrating the political leadership of local governments to meet the challenges posed by climate change globally through ambitious provisions, as well as an innovative approach to measuring, reporting and verifying local climate actions.
Mayor House is located in Bogota, accompanied by the Councillor for the Environment, Adela Martinez-Cachá, participating in the summit "Cities and Climate Change" and has signed the accession of Murcia the "Covenant of Mexico City", thus accepting the invitation of the promoters of this initiative.
Today, half the world's population lives in cities and, according to the International Energy Agency in 2006 were the cities where we used up to 67% energy and generated over 70% of all CO2 emissions.
Thus, cities become the apex of climate action, and the Covenant of Mexico City offers an appropriate instrument to act as they are strategic partners not only because they have an important role in the emission of greenhouse gases, but because many of the policies to be implemented to mitigate these emissions are of direct competition: the development of transport systems, the handling and disposal of waste, water supply, regulation of energy use in the buildings, etc.
Murcia, in leadership
The leading position of the City of Murcia in the development of energy-saving plans and reducing emissions of greenhouse gases has been endorsed by the European Union, who elected this administration to advise two cities of Morocco and Belarus in creating action plans for sustainable energy, with the aim of involving the cities of the countries bordering the EU policies to combat climate change.
Now, the presence of foreign representatives in Bogota will be used by House to invite the leaders of cities attendees to join the Covenant of Mayors of the European Union, aimed at promoting sustainability through energy efficiency policies.
