"Music in Ancient Greece" is the title of a book just published by Editum, Publications Service of the University of Murcia.
The new work, the authors "is an introduction to the music of ancient Greece, directed not only to specialists in classical culture, but also to those readers interested in the history of music and, more specifically, in the ancient world. "
Inseparable part of Greek poetry from the beginning, the music had a strong presence in many areas of Greek society: from theater and myth to education and philosophical thought.
In these pages, the authors study the Greek musical events from sources available to them, their evolution in literary genres and the internal structure of the Greek musical system, through surviving fragments with musical notation.
The work thus offers a useful material for those interested in music as the artistic and cultural Greek civilization from historical approaches, philosophical and musicological.
The authors
Jose Garcia Lopez, has been professor of Greek at the University Complutense of Madrid, Tenerife and La Laguna until his retirement in 2006, Professor of Greek at the University of Murcia, which is currently Professor Emeritus.
Francisco Javier Perez Cartagena, doctor in Classics, is currently professor of IES La Basilica (Algezares, Murcia).
He has devoted his research to various aspects of Greek music.
Redondo Pedro Reyes, Ph.D. in Classical Philology, Professor of IES is Sabinar (Roquetas de Mar, Almería) and associate professor at the University of Murcia.
Book Launch
The book launch will take place today, Thursday, October 25, at 19.00 in the Conference Hall of the Faculty of Arts, Campus de La Merced.
