The Socialist Group claims the use of bicycles in Murcia as alternative means of transport and insurance (18/07/2012)

The deputies Pedro Lopez, Susana Hernandez and Andrea Garries, accompanied by members of Socialist Youth and users of this transport, have made today a bike ride from the Regional Library until the end of the Gran Vía, to complain to the municipal PP real implementation of bicycle lanes to facilitate movement of people around the city without having to risk their lives

The Socialist Party councilors Pedro Lopez, Susana Hernandez and Andrea Garries, along with members of Young Socialists have today made a bicycle tour from the Regional Library (a strategic point where many people come and need to connect to safe routes), Avenida Juan Carlos I (one of the few sections that have bike lanes with roundabouts, junctions, which is especially dangerous where accidents have already occurred), The Round (another particularly troublesome for cyclists), Alfonso X the Wise, James I (both areas were in theory to have segregated bike lanes by removing parking, as the Plan) to Gran Via (the PSOE commitment to make pedestrian priority, with bike lanes, open to public transport, emergency vehicles, loading, unloading and access to public and private car parks), to vindicate the use of bicycles in Murcia as alternative means of transport and insurance.

"We have a great city with great weather to enjoy the bike, however the City still does not opt for this mode of transport to move towards a more sustainable city," said Lopez.

In this regard, the spokesman of the PSOE PP claims the city a firm commitment to cycling and to stop doing projects include bike lanes only on paper and in the end never executed.

It is essential, Lopez added that solve and answer the allegations of the Bicycle Master Plan that was developed in 2010 to approve and implement permanently in collaboration with associations of users of the bike and interested citizens .

"It's the only way to provide safe routes for cyclists in the city and paths that connect to points where there is a large influx of people, such as stations, libraries, universities, hospitals," the mayor stressed Susana Hernandez, who has claimed that "it is unacceptable to presume to offer bicycles to tourists when the reality is that you can drive around town without risking their lives."
