The opening of the first public station compressed natural gas helps ensure the City Council to promote mobility more efficient and cleaner (17/07/2012)

The Mayor attends the opening of the first point of public supply of this fuel for vehicles in the region promoted by Gas Natural Group.

Cespa, Aguas de Murcia and Disfrimur already use compressed natural gas fleet in the fall and will join the new public transport.

Today, the traditional transport accounts for 28% of global energy consumption and 34% of CO2 emissions.

The use of CNG in the street cleaning and waste collection in 1868 saves Murcia Teq CO2 per year.

Chamber warns of the need to change the habits of urban mobility "if we really want to enjoy a city that respects the environment and provide us with a better quality of life."

Conseguir una ciudad menos contaminada requiere necesariamente implantar una movilidad sostenible, que respete el medio ambiente y ofrezca una mejor calidad de vida a los ciudadanos.

This commitment to the City Council can not be reversed, and the measures implemented in recent years, joins today the opening of the first public station for compressed natural gas vehicles, resulting from the agreement of the City and Gas Natural Group.

It was located in Alta, this is the first point of supply of its kind to be launched in the region, thus advancing sustainability policies, especially in the field of clean energy.

It is an understanding in the field of current energy policies aimed at the use of cleaner energy, promoting energy saving and efficiency, promoting renewable energy and improving air quality.

Thus, Murcia has taken steps to promote mobility by compressed natural gas in the municipality, which has already joined Cespa, Disfrimur and Aguas de Murcia.

When autumn begins to run the new public transport, the entire bus fleet will be supplied also by the alternative fuel.

Chamber explained that the bid Murcia mobility more efficient and cleaner rests on two fundamental lines of action: first, to offer alternatives to private vehicles (promotion of the bicycle, tram, public transportation, etc ....) and secondly, by the introduction of cleaner fuels and reduce CO2 emissions, to become a real alternative and accessible.

A clean fuel

Compressed natural gas is considered a clean fuel and therefore more respectful of the environment than petroleum, as it helps to improve air quality in cities, reducing by more than 85% of emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, major pollutants that affect human health, and up to 20% CO2, the main greenhouse gas.

Furthermore, the CNG reduces noise pollution, due to a natural gas vehicle up to 50% reduces the noise generated by the engine.

Furthermore, the CNG fuel is very competitive from the economic point of view, when compared to diesel fuel and gasoline, as savings are achieved with respect to the first 30% and 50% more than the latter.

Today, the traditional transport accounts for 28% of global energy consumption and 34% of CO2 emissions, hence the importance of encouraging comprehensive solutions that reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

The use of CNG vehicles in 29 street cleaning and refuse collection allows Murcia Cespa save 1,868 Teq CO2 per year compared to the pollution that would result if it had chosen earlier diesel engines.

A collection vehicle diesel fuel emits almost 280 tonnes of CO2 per year, while if it supplies compressed natural gas is reduced by 70 tons per year less, implying a decrease of 25%.

A global project

The addition of compressed natural gas for mobility in the municipality of Murcia is in addition to other initiatives launched earlier that also aim to help design a more environmentally friendly and more combative with the effects of climate change.

"We work to build a better Murcia from the environmental point of view, in which citizens enjoy a better quality of life, and the only way to achieve it can be navigated with bold steps like the one we have today," said Chamber .

Other significant developments carried out in Murcia have come from the hand of the tram, the promotion of cycling as a regular means of transport, improvement of urban spaces for pedestrians, installing a charging point for electric bicycles and motorcycles, the forthcoming restructuring of public transport service and the introduction of hybrid vehicles to the fleet of cars from City Hall and street cleaning and rubbish collection.
