Meteorological Station of Forest Park Municipal Majal Blanco, who manages the Meteorological Association of Southeast (AMETSE) and participating in the project CLIMASCOY, assist in an international assessment of air pollution by persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
The research is led by Professor Kevin Jones of Lancaster University (England) and involves the University of Murcia.
The study aims to establish the time course of some air pollutants, such as some pesticides and PCBs, PAHs, PBDEs.
Data will be collected by a device which is a metal saucer type, about 30 cm in diameter and 25 cm high with polyurethane foam disks.
The study has been underway for several years in northern Europe.
We currently have covered a sampling area from Svalbard (near the North Pole) to Sao Tome and Principe, through the Azores and Canary Islands.
In Iberia, the study has three monitoring stations in Portugal and two in the peninsula, one in Barcelona and now in the White Majal.
Professionals Meteorological Center of Murcia, located in Guadalupe, contacted the Department of Environment of the City of Murcia, Adela Martinez-Cachá directed to propose the installation of the samplers in the meteorological station of Majal Blanco because the location has the optimum conditions for the location of these sensors, away from sources of contamination and with a direct access difficult.
The devices were installed during the month of May, taking advantage of a weekend in which the investigator of the project visited Murcia.
The devices do not need special maintenance every 3-6 months and the researchers replaced the discs with new ones, in order to measure various atmospheric constituents with the study.
