A research group at the University of Murcia, led by Professor Juan Guerra Montes, has published an article in the Journal of Bryology which analyzes the diversity of the largest family of mosses, the Pottiaceae.
This family of small plants, with about 1500 species, represents much of the dominant vegetation in arid regions of the world, researchers say the group of Biology, Ecology and Evolution of bryophytes and spermatophytes.
"The taxonomic treatment of this family, the authors add, has been particularly difficult for many years, mainly due to problems of polymorphism, the small size of many species, the difficulty of reproducing sexually, the complexity of some differential characters and lack of regional treatments to date. "
This group has worked since 2001 in the study of diversity and distribution of Pottiaceae in South America, a project led by Professor Maria Jesus Cano.
The publication that has published research, Journal of Bryology, has been named magazine of February by Maney Publishing.
