A doctoral thesis defended at the University of Murcia by Cesar Nicolas Cuevas has proven the benefits of using compost derived from sewage sludge as a stabilizer of organic matter in arid soils.
This research concludes that "the application of organic amendments on degraded soils is a suitable technique for restoration so as to increase its stocks of organic carbon."
For the realization of the thesis, the author conducted laboratory experiments under controlled conditions, and studies using soils from semiarid areas of the Murcian town of Cañada Hermosa and abandoned agricultural plots located in Santomera.
The dissertation was directed by Carlos García-Izquierdo and Maria Teresa Hernandez Fernandez.
