The work of Professor of Mathematics at the University of Murcia Francisco Esquembre on learning the fundamentals of physics through computer tools has been awarded the prize Spore of the journal Science, one of the highest impact factor of scientific world.
The Open Source Physics (OSP, Open Source Physics), prepared by Esquembre, dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, in collaboration with researchers Wolfgang Christian and Lyle Barbato, web hosting in computer modeling tools to simulate phenomena of the world real for students to grasp the concepts of modern physics.
OSP offers teachers and students of physics 500 simulations, and downloaded by 50,000 times.
It has three tools: one for video analysis and modeling, another platform for creating online communities and third, Easy Java Simulations (EJS), created by Professor Esquembre.
With EJS, physics students can manipulate the elements of a model experiment with the effects of such manipulation and learn first hand the physical and laws.
All models can be screened for a possible error and modified freely to create new models.
Although the tool is intended for physics, other fields such as biology, chemistry and even the economy can also take advantage of the idea.
The work has been published in the journal, constituting the fourth time in the last fifty years that appears in Science an article by a researcher at the University of Murcia.
