The Mayor, Miguel Angel House, has welcomed the European Commission's decision to choose the Mediterranean corridor connecting Spain with France as a priority for European funding from 2014.
The performance will become a major productive infrastructure "will help to emerge stronger from the crisis facing the country," said House.
Its implementation will be one of the best opportunities for Spain and Europe to overcome the economic crisis and "boost employment, productivity and sustainability," and offer "the fastest way to get to the heart of Europe."
The layout and brings together the largest transit of goods in the country and will connect the two major waterfront of the Union: The North Sea and the Western Mediterranean.
The Mayor also pointed out that this is the path along which the most traffic of goods of the Iberian Peninsula and has the greatest potential for growth and impact on the competitiveness of the whole of Spain.
"As part of the Great Axis Ferrmed, uniting the two fronts, Europe's largest port (North Sea and Western Mediterranean), has great strategic value to the European Union," he added.
The full City Council unanimously approved a motion to support all initiatives that will be promoted to protect the route from Algeciras to France.
