The Governing Council has approved an investment of 2.8 million euros from the Sanitation Authority of the Region of Murcia (ESAMUR), attached to the Ministry of Agriculture and Water for the construction of a cogeneration plant in This purification Murcia.
The objective of this investment is to improve the energy efficiency of the Wastewater Treatment Station (STP) through the use of biogas produced in the purification processes.
The action will result in significant environmental and economic improvement by reducing the energy consumption of the plant and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
The transformation of organic sludge generated in the purification process in the plant can produce a volume of Murcia This biogas with an energy value equivalent to about 14 Gigawatios-hora/año.
The biogas produced will be subjected to different conditioning processes to be subsequently used for combustion engines that drive electric generators.
Electrical and thermal energy generated could be applied to energy consumption of own treatment or exported to the electricity distribution network, which will contribute to national energy efficiency.
The improvement achieved will reduce the operating costs of the plant, funded through the canon ESAMUR sanitation, and recover the investment in the short term.
In addition, the Sanitation Authority estimates that the use of biogas generated in the plant can mean a reduction of about 3,600 tons of CO2 per year, which would be emitted into the atmosphere if this energy is generated from fossil fuels, thus confirming the project's environmental benefits, in addition to its undoubted economic interest.
