The University of Murcia held at its facilities in the Veterinary Teaching Farm horse-assisted therapy for people with disabilities, mental or sensory impairment, according to the agreement with the Foundation sucrito Carousel of Cartagena.
Professor Francisco Fuentes, director of the Farm, said the signing ceremony, held at the offices of Chancellor, the details of the agreement with the University of Murcia becomes the first Spanish university to have a rehab center through animal-assisted therapy.
In addition to the welfare activities aimed at different groups of people with disabilities, courses and workshops conducted with horses therapies aimed at professionals and students, doing so is practical on this matter as set out in the agreement.
Sources spoke of plans to improve service, passing to build a track for horses on a plot of 4,000 m² close to the farm or, if this option is not possible, to enable a riding school next to the stables.
The director of the Farm Veterinary attributed to the rector of the University, José Antonio Cobacho and his team the credit for the creation of the rehabilitation center, which he said is the only one with these characteristics within the powers of Spain and Europe.
The Carousel Foundation president, Luis Cuenca, which will contribute human resources and horses for the service, congratulated the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, represented at the ceremony by the Deputy Dean Maria Jesus Periago, and the line taken by the Farm to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities or at risk of social exclusion.
This idea abounded rector, who spoke of the role of university education in human values ​​and the prestige enjoyed by the faculty.
