A balanced diet can prevent or minimize the number and severity of attacks and symptoms of acute intermittent porphyria, a rare hereditary disease, according to the findings of the doctoral thesis at the University of Murcia José Luis Gris Piñero.
This research, which has obtained excellent cum laude, states that "appropriate treatment for porphyria is the increase of carbohydrates in the diet."
For the realization of the thesis, the author evaluated the patients in the Region of Murcia through nutritional questionnaires, biometrics and quality of life, determining also the antioxidant enzyme profile.
The results show that patients have an unbalanced diet, energy and nutritionally, so that should improve this situation.
The study was led by Antonia Maria Jimenez, Luis Garcia and Maria Antonia Murcia.
