Ecologists in Action has once again raised to the competent authorities on the issue of air quality (City of Murcia, the Ministry of Agriculture and Water and the Ministry of Health) that during the month of February have been exceedences of limit values PM10 microparticles in the municipality of Murcia for seven days of February.
These data recorded by the metering station of San Basilio show a significant problem of deteriorating air quality of microparticles PM10 pollution in Murcia city and its surroundings
The air pollution legislation sets a limit value of 50 micrograms per cubic meter of PM10 microparticles.
This value has been exceeded, as we mentioned above, for seven days with a peak of contamination of 89 micrograms per cubic meter on 8 February.
It should be noted that during the month of January has been 12 days of exceedances of the limit value allowed in Murcia.
The maximum number of days with exceedances established in the regulations is 35 per year.
The direct origins of the deterioration of air quality by micro PM10 pollution are transportation and industrial activities which can add an occasional natural intrusions of Saharan dust.
PM10 particles can penetrate into the lower respiratory tract and are a severe environmental problem for serious conditions to ducts and respiratory system.
PM10 particles can cause respiratory diseases, asthma, aggravation of allergic conditions and cardiovascular problems.
Ecologists in Action has reiterated on many occasions the need for competent authorities do not minimize the problem of air quality in Murcia and its environment and develop preventive measures for these episodes.
The environmental organization, claims to have carried out actions to control emissions of industrial activities and traffic (in the context of a Sustainable Mobility Plan) and the development of action plans to reduce city pollution and environment.
Ecologists in Action, on the other hand, states that the two measuring stations for capital and its surroundings Murcia (Murcia-San Basilio and Sewer) are clearly insufficient for a proper assessment of air quality indices and the expansion of demand control stations, especially in the north and east of the city.
Royal Decree 1073/2002, obliges the institutions responsible for developing action plans with the aim of reducing air pollution levels below the limits.
