Murcia University today announced the Department of Naval History, which promotes in collaboration with the Navy, and that is the first in Spain focused on military history.
The Chair will give priority to the completion of works, studies and research in history and naval heritage, for which among its activities scheduled for 2011 identifying a piece of artillery, the description of an anonymous manuscript and study on an oil painting.
Admiral Chief of Staff of the Navy, Manuel Rebollo, said during his visit to Murcia that the Chair is an important first step to raise awareness of the burden of naval history in the evolution of Spain, a role not always well-weighted historiography, he said.
The University of Murcia with this initiative is about the sea, said Rebollo, who expressed support for the Navy to a Chair to facilitate the research work of historians by making available their previous sailing knowledge to promote the understanding of the facts naval in its historical context.
The Department of Naval History will be led by Professor of the University of Murcia Juan José Sánchez Baena and will be headquartered in the building of the old locker Racing Naval Commission in the city of Cartagena, which has been donated by the Navy.
The director of the Chair reported on the presentation, held in the Chamber of Arts, to develop activities, including seminars cited, the study of ancient objects (manuscripts, paintings, guns, etc. ) and the publication of a collection of works on auxiliary sciences of naval history specifically aimed at supporting the work of the historian.
Professor Baena Sanchez also announced the forthcoming implementation of the first official Master of Naval History, targeting both civilian personnel, and officials want to broaden their training and development conferences, workshops, roundtables, exhibitions and outreach activities naval culture.
The presentation ceremony, attended by a large number of civilian authorities, including the government delegate, Rafael González-Tovar, military and academic, was chaired by the rector of the University, José Antonio Cobacho, who previously accompanied board of directors of the institution, received Convalescence Admiral chief who signed the guestbook at the University of Murcia.
The visit of the officers, among whom was also the director Admiral Body Naval History and Culture, Gonzalo Rodriguez, included the opening in the Faculty of Law of the exhibition "Reclaiming the Naval Heritage: Books of Galeras" in which you can see illustrated panels and models of boats.
The inaugural lecture of the Chair, in turn, corresponded to the university professor Carlos Martínez Shaw, a member of the Royal Academy of History, who delivered the lecture "The Naval History as Total History."
