The socialist candidate for mayor of Murcia, Pedro López, this morning visited the park and ride at the end of the Malecon Garden where he offered a press conference in which he has staked "to improve significantly this place where each day dozens of Murcia leave their vehicles to offer reasonable terms of security, because now is full of gorillas, the lighting is much better and has a poor image of the city. "
Pedro Lopez recalled that the park and ride is a proposal that has been raised in all the legislatures, the latter through an amendment in municipal budgets, and what has really made a bad copy of this initiative .
"This is not the concept of park and ride, this is a lot asphalt that has been put a little light."
Instead, the Socialist candidate proposes to implement a network of real car parks on the outskirts of the city to help reduce traffic in the downtown.
Thus, Pedro Lopez poses "connect these free parking with public transport, bicycle rental outlets to facilitate the movement of motorists to the center of the city", as in other cities and has set the example of Seville where intermodal stations have park and ride on the outside and are connected by bike lanes.
The socialist candidate has been convinced of the need to reduce traffic in the downtown because we have good examples in Madrid and Barcelona and has chosen to take action in Murcia before the pollution levels are alarming.
"If you do not make a firm commitment to public transport and bicycle use, to advance the pedestrian and to reduce the number of vehicles entering the center we go through to have a serious problem in our city. You can not do things by halves and we must foster a friendly and sustainable city where mobility is combined with respect for the environment. "
