The doctoral thesis presented at the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Murcia by Maria Jesus Ruiz Garcia has highlighted the benefits of prolonged breastfeeding and has recommended the implementation of initiatives that contribute to the promotion and support for it in society .
According to the author of the study, which has obtained excellent cum laude, "based on children's rights is essential to create an enabling environment for mothers, their families and other caregivers of children make informed decisions about optimal feeding as breastfeeding. "
Maria Jesus Ruiz says that breastfeeding should be exclusive in the first six months of baby's life, while thereafter be shared "with complementary feeding."
It also indicates that breastfeeding should continue up to two years of age, at least, "and to achieve this dream requires skilled practical support from health professionals, as well as mothers' groups that support it."
The doctoral thesis was directed by Professor Carmen Gómez, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Murcia.
