The Department of Environment invites Murcia to make responsible consumption (14/12/2010)

Next Thursday there will be an information day on which encourage citizens to have a 'green home'

The Department of Environment, through the Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change in Murcia, Murcia wants are encouraged to have a 'green home' and making a responsible drinking, taking advantage of the arrival of Christmas.

We therefore organized a briefing to be held next Thursday, at 19.30 pm in the Lecture Hall of the City Hall Annex building, to which are invited all Murcia who want to contribute to environmental protection.

So, next Thursday will discuss the second phase of this program 'Green Homes' related to responsible drinking.

Thus, the challenge is to change certain habits to make the purchase.

The aim is to replace at least five basic food products from other agricultural and livestock production, removed from the cart at least two products harmful to the environment and eliminate two redundant products.

It also seeks to incorporate new criteria in selecting the items in the cart, such as prioritizing local products, avoid products sobreempaquetados ...

The guidelines in this program is to encourage local trade, consumption of organic food, recycling and reuse, the purchase of Fair Trade products and furniture with certificate of traceability.

Thus, the meeting offered several tips:

- Become aware of that consumption habits have social and environmental effects and act accordingly.

- Opt for seasonal produce, local, and made as close as possible to avoid transport over long distances and promoting the local economy and culture.

- The consumption of food grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers helps to prevent contamination of soil, groundwater and atmosphere.

Organic farming fertilizes the soil and slowing the desertification maintaining wildlife habitats.

- Reduce the amount of waste produced by your home.

In the procurement avoid products with excess packaging or packaging.

Look for bulk or packaged with recycled materials.

- Learn to reuse and save money.

- Buy fair trade products.

Take an interest in the ethics of the marks.

- Look for the Energy Star label or similar electronic products to make sure you save energy during use.

- Make a shopping list to leave home so you know what you really need and save money.

Remember that the first phase of Green Homes, the related energy and water savings, was a success.

The end result has exceeded expectations as the home of the program have achieved a reduction in consumption by 7.1% on average.

With regard to water saving, the initial goal was to cut between 6-10% of household consumption.

Data has shown that households in the program have achieved a reduction in water consumption by 10.2% on average over the previous year.

The 'Green Homes' is part of the activities of Citizen Participation, Local Strategy to Combat Climate Change.

The aim is for families called, forming and raising awareness about the impact of energy consumption on global warming and the global water scarcity and, consequently, reduce their consumption through changing some daily habits.
