The Mayor of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cámara, has declared today a day of official mourning for the death of José María Aroca Ruiz-Funes, the first democratic mayor of the city of Murcia, a professor and member of PSOE.
José María Aroca Ruiz-Funes, was born in Murcia on June 25, 1933.
Physician and professor, was the nephew of the famous jurist Murcia and the Second Republic Minister Mariano Ruiz-Funes.
José María Aroca obtained his doctorate in medicine from the University of Madrid and was appointed deputy secretary of the Medical Association of Murcia in 1969.
Also entered the Royal Academy of Medicine of Murcia and in 1975, he chaired the Board of the University of Murcia.
José María Aroca served until 1979, as Director of Ente autonomic and got the Mayor of Murcia the same year, during the celebration of the first democratic municipal elections.
He remained in office until 1983, when he declined to stand for election.
Mayor House has recognized the dedication and commitment of José María Aroca to the city of Murcia and highlighted the work of democratization of the highest municipal institution.
