The Mayor of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cámara Botía, presented this morning at the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid Murcia's candidacy to the European Capital of Culture 2016, a proposal that articulates the theme City of Peace, land of light and offering up to 16 categories that encompass the important historic and artistic city, its cosmopolitan character, harmony and tolerance between peoples, or the continued presence of Murcia in Europe.

Mayor House has proposed in his speech to Murcia as "capital of the Mediterranean, becoming the counterpart of Poland, as a Central European capital."

In addition, stressed that the city meets all conditions and all requirements to advance to the next stage of selection, "because we have presented an exciting project, cohesive and participatory."

Together with the Mayor, the delegation have joined the Councillor for Culture Murcia and European Programmes, Fatima Barnuevo, Councilman Quality and Modernization of the Administration, Events and Popular Culture, Rafael Gomez, General Director of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage, Enrique Ujaldón , the Vice-Chancellor of Coordination and Communication of the University of Murcia, Maria Angeles Esteban, the council of the Municipal Socialist Group in the city of Murcia, Alfonso Navarro and Jose Manuel Abellán, the cultural manager Alfonso Riera, and the Director of FCG , Cris Gabarrón, and the painter and sculptor Christopher Gabarrón.

They have also endorsed the candidacy through a video that was projected before the jury, the President of the Autonomous Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, the President of Cajamurcia, Carlos Egea, Ambassador Inocencio Arias, the composer Roque Baños, the Rector Catholic University San Antonio de Murcia, Josefina García Lozano, and the children's section of the Coral Discantus.

Regarding the infrastructure needed to house the capital, the mayor stressed that Murcia has a strong network of museums, theaters, auditoriums, art galleries, sports facilities and conference venues for large events, which will add a new palace multipurpose conference, a multidisciplinary cultural center open to new trends within the walls of the Old Jail, a scenario designed for opera and ballet, and a museum specializing in design and architecture.

Murcia's candidacy, built over months of exchange of ideas and reflection with many cultural groups around the world, is summarized in 16 reasons to support Murcia, which underpin the belief that the city is poised to become the Cultural Capital of Europe .

They are:

1.

We are the land of peace.

Murcia is a city of three cultures.

Christians lived together, Arabs and Jews in an example of tolerance, now over a thousand years later, still in force.

2.

We are the land of the living.

Today, 154 nationalities live in Murcia, citizens of all European countries and other continents, which, like centuries ago, are a daily example of tolerance.

3.

We land in Europe.

From the western shore of the Mediterranean, Murcia has always looked to Europe.

Picking up the legacy of Wise King Alfonso X, whose remains are deposited in the cathedral, Murcia diplomat Diego de Saavedra y Fajardo was a pioneer of European unity.

We are the candidate of the Mediterranean.

Murcia has not only an Arab past is proud, but today is the gate of tolerance of other faiths.

Ibn-Arabi, the Sufi philosopher, was born in Murcia and is a universal example of religious tolerance.
