Murcia change will raise a proposal to the plenary on Thursday so that the City Council expresses its rejection of the cut of funding in Correos, which will affect mostly rural populations and less economically profitable areas.
Nacho Tornel, the councilor of municipal training to defend the motion, explained that the goal of it is to stop the deterioration of postal service in the Region of Murcia, contribute to the necessary increase in the workforce in the municipality and reverse the cuts applied in recent years from the Central Administration.
In this regard, he recalled that the public postal service has been cut their budget funding for the provision of the Universal Postal Service by 66%, about 120 million euros, in 2017. In addition, the General State Budgets of 2018 provide a departure of 60 million compared to the 180 that were made available to the service in 2015.
To this must be added that the State owes in this respect to the public postal company more than 250 million euros corresponding to years of the last years. In this situation, Correos has updated its tariffs for Universal Postal Service products 9, 17%, which especially affects citizens, companies in rural areas, population-dispersed environments or industrial estates, and the service itself, already deficient in these spaces.
No to cut jobs
The decline in the post office budget has led to the disappearance of 15,000 jobs in Spain since 2010, 150 of them in the Region of Murcia, and this has resulted in the elimination or reduction of home delivery of correspondence, closure of offices in rural areas and reduction of opening hours for the public.
In the case of the municipality of Murcia, according to trade union sources, the adjustment may involve the elimination of 20 postmen and leave the districts of Algezares, Valladolises, Corvera and Zeneta without regular distribution.
In total, the loss of employment and the weakening of the service may affect some 10,000 citizens.
More budget, better service
The motion of Cambiemos Murcia raises, in addition to the rejection of the cuts, that the central government is urged to correct in the parliamentary procedure of the PGE for 2018 the reduction of funding, as well as the restitution of the 120 million cut, in order to guarantee the provision of the Universal Postal Service and the viability of the public company.
It also urges the Ministry of Finance to approve the Strategic Plan that allows the corporate adaptation of Correos to meet the needs of the citizenry and achieve a sufficient workforce, and unblock the Collective Agreement and Civil Service Agreement, which has been blocked for more than four years.
