In an auditorium of the Faculty of Economics and Business full of public up to the flag, it was held in the early afternoon the inauguration of José Luján as the new Rector of the University of Murcia, seventeenth of the centenary history of the teaching institution.
The event was chaired by Fernando López Miras, and in it were the incoming and outgoing rector, José Luján and José Orihuela, as well as their respective teams.
Orihuela was the first to take the floor to thank all his team for the support shown in these four years, commenting that he hoped not to have disappointed the expectations placed on him at the beginning of the legislature.
The outgoing Rector made a tour of some of the most important improvements made during his term.
From Polanski to Sinatra
He assured that nobody could accuse him or his team of interfering in the elections or having denied the convalescent champagne to the winners.
Orihuela, who began her term with a video of Roman Polanski's film "El pianista", chose to finish it with another video, in this case a video clip with the interpretation of "A mi manera" by Frank Sinatra.
Four years ago, Orihuela had staged his request that "let me interpret my own melody before the competent authority."
On this occasion, the famous piece of music in which the singer said "I can continue, until the end, my way", brought one of the biggest applauses of the act.
Orihuela finished his speech giving the incoming team, "in which I have great friends", his "warmest welcome.
A three-word thread
The new Rector José Luján, for his part, articulated his speech around three words, or rather three ideas:
The gratitude, thanking the professors Lozano, Gómez, Artal and Martínez, who competed in the elections for the rectorship, as well as their respective teams, their commitment to the UMU, since "the five candidacies emanated from the vocation of service and the illusion of working for the improvement and progress of the University of Murcia ".
Now the elections are past assured, "and from now on it's time to work together."
Luján also had words of thanks to Rector Orihuela, and a warm memory for the recently deceased Bernardo Cascales, which was seconded by another general applause-, as well as for professors Montoya Melgar and Cobacho Gómez, "people who with their encouragement have brought out my best qualities. "
The second word was responsibility, "which implies assuming the representation and direction of a university as large, complex and as traditional as that of Murcia." We want to get an attractive and internationally recognized university that, in the medium term, can compete with other prestigious universities. "He also referred to the importance of increasing relations between the university and society and favoring dialogue and communication with public administrations, institutions, companies, associations and social agents, and training throughout the years. life, a change that represents a challenge for the UMU, "to which we will dedicate the necessary effort and for which we will seek the collaboration of institutions and social organizations".
University as reference
The third word on which he wove the thread of his speech was confidence, "the university should stand out as a beacon and reference for a society that has lost the security it once had about its present and, above all, its future "
We need to recover and listen to the teachers, he said, while it is necessary for the "university to go out in search of society and assume the challenges and opportunities of the current world as their own."
"We ask for confidence, but not a blank check," adding that "the public university must be an example to society of rigor and probity", and ended up saying that "we are preparing to start our 'expedition' with the favorable disposition of spirit that results from the gratitude that we owe to so many people, the conscience of the responsibility that before them and before the society we contract and the confidence that we have in the University of Murcia, that is the University that we want ", to what followed another of the biggest applause, and without a doubt the most prolonged of the day.
More University and more Region of Murcia
The closing of the floor by the president of the CARM Fernando López Miras, who addressed the new Rector congratulating him and affirming that "you assume a responsibility from which you will contribute to make more university, and with it, more Murcia Region" , after making a tour of a university election, open, free and participatory, process by which congratulated the rest of the candidates, said, referring to Luján, that "you have shown signs of conciliatory character and the prestige achieved by the one who was appointed by all the economic and social agents "as president of the CES," an experience and a prestige that today you place at the service of the oldest of our teaching institutions ".
The president affirmed that we are taking decisive steps to open the doors of a new region proud of its past, but aware that it has a stage ahead "that will be the most important in our recent history."
López Miras had words of thanks to former Rector Orihuela for his dedication and ability to reach agreements, and also said "that the success of Rector Luján and his team will be that of the entire Region."
"In the name of all Murcia," he finally said, "I wish you every success in this new stage that you are initiating today."
