NOW MURCIA wants the Murcian meatloaf to be recognized for its historical and cultural value, for which reason it has requested the Autonomous Community to initiate the file for the declaration of Intangible Ethnographic Heritage, in the category of Cultural Interest (BIC) .
The councilor Angeles Micol, promoter of this initiative and author of the comprehensive letter delivered to the Ministry of Culture, says that "it is a unique gastronomic delight in Spain and throughout the world, because its recipe and development are exclusive to the municipality Murcia and are part of their identity as a people. "
The mayor emphasizes that the Murcian meat pie "is something alive whose production technique has been used for centuries, maintaining the balance between tradition and innovation".
Thus, it emphasizes that the history of this preparation has its roots in the Middle Ages and already in 1695 was regulated by an ordinance that fixed the right measures, the quality of the flour and even imposed a two-year exile on artisans who did not comply the rule.
Murcia is the only place where the recipe has been kept in the regulations of the times of King Charles II, the last representative of the Austrian dynasty in Spain.
Looking back, we also find the meatloaf in the works of masters of Spanish painting, as is the case of Murillo's children eating cake.
In addition, there is a series of elements that are linked to the meat pie, such as traditional pastry shops or squares and public places linked to the location of the oldest pastry shops and the tradition of making delicacies.
Among these enclaves highlights the Plaza de las Flores, while among the most emblematic bakeries are Bonache made Murcia cake since 1828-, Zaher, Espinosa or Maite, among many others.
Micol stresses that Murcian meatloaf has always been of great importance in the region's gastronomy, "but we can say that since the last decades it has taken on an unusual strength, showing enormous vitality today in the context of new and broader frameworks of consumption".
The Murcian delicacy, moreover, competes successfully with the formulas of fast food and international franchises, but I would appreciate the protection that the declaration of Intangible Ethnographic Heritage would grant.
There are samples that testify to the vigor enjoyed by the dish from Murcia, such as the creation in the municipality, in 2009, of Meatloaf Day on April 15-;
from the Friends of the Meatloaf Association, in 2010, or the Best Meatloaf Award, in 2014, initiatives taken by the City Council, to which the mastery and dedication of the confectioners' guild is added.
The councilor points out that Asturian cider and the Mediterranean diet hold the recognition that Murcia now intends to obtain meatloaf, while UNESCO has granted the status of Intangible Heritage of Humanity to recipes such as Neapolitan pizza or traditional food Japanese
"The distinction and protection that we now ask Murcia Murcia meat pie," he concludes, "are more than deserved for a centennial preparation, rooted as few in the history of Murcia and the present of the municipality, and that is a fine ambassador of Murcia culture and tradition ".
