The Mayor, José Ballesta, opened this afternoon, accompanied by members of the Municipal Corporation, the 'Calle 8 de Abril' on the occasion of the International Day of the Gypsy People, held yesterday around the world.
This is a request from the Fundación Secretariado Gitano that the Murcia City Council hosted and that has culminated today with the discovery of a plaque that gives its name to this street in the neighborhood of La Paz, which recognizes the rights of these citizens and the work that associations like this carry out throughout the year.
"With the discovery of this plaque, which gives its name to a street in the neighborhood of La Paz, we are taking a step further in the collaboration that the City Council and the Foundation maintain permanently and that so many good fruits are being produced.
A union that moves to education, to training, to inclusion in municipal plans, to the struggle to achieve equality and the full inclusion of Roma in society ", highlighted José Ballesta during his speech.
The ceremony was also attended by the president of the Eastern District Board, Rafael Gómez Gómez, members of the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, represented by its president, Jesús Salmerón, and social entities.
An initiative that adds to the one proposed by councilor Conchita Ruiz in the Plenary last March for the adhesion to the Campaign of the Foundation of the Gypsy Secretariat, 'Partir de 0', which received the unanimous support of the groups.
In this way the capital of the Region is declared a city free of discrimination so that nobody leaves at a disadvantage.
Cooperation with the Roma people
Currently the interventions aimed at the integration of the Roma population of the municipality of Murcia by social services are organized around 5 axes:
1) The process of schooling and its monitoring of Roma children, an essential aspect in any process of social integration and which, in the case of this sector of the population, acquires special relevance.
It includes the accompaniment throughout the school transit, early schooling, the basic coverage of these minors, the incorporation of gypsies in the squares available to the social services in the conciliation centers or the payment of other private centers in the rest of the municipality. in which there are no public resources.
2) Promotion of employability and access to the workplace, through training and mediation with companies for the incorporation of Roma women and men, a program that takes place in the municipality of Murcia, thanks to the collaboration agreement that said entity maintains with the City Council.
3) Social Sensitization, through the cooperation of the City of Murcia with all the campaigns that the Gypsy Secretariat has developed to make visible the discrimination of this social group or for the enhancement of its advances and capacities.
To this we must add the municipal initiatives themselves to make visible this social group (celebration of the day of the Roma people) or support the activities promoted by the Foundation in our municipality.
4) Promotion of Roma women, through their training and their training for incorporation into the workplace, through the implementation of activities, courses and integration plans.
5) Access to housing, through the agreement signed with the Habito Association (integrated by Cáritas Diocesana, Copedeco and the Fundación Secretariado Gitano) to follow up on families rehoused in housing, in addition to the Accompaniment Program for the Rehousing of families in situation of Social Exclusion and Chronic Residential (PARES), promoted by the regional administration and financed by the European Union.
