'Murcia: a generation of sculptors' brings together, for the first time, the works of the masters José Planes, Antonio Campillo, Francisco Toledo, José Hernández Cano, Juan González Moreno, José Molera, José Carrilero and José Toledo.

More than fifty sculptures of marble, stone and bronze that share among themselves the greatness of their origin: the prodigious hands of the most important Murcian sculptors of our recent history.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the patron of the Antonio Campillo Foundation, Juan Pérez Ferra, and the curator of the exhibition, Martín Páez Burruezo, today presented the exhibition 'Murcia: a generation of sculptors', an exceptional show that brings together , for the first time, the works of the most renowned Murcian sculptors of the same generation: José Planes, Antonio Campillo, Francisco Toledo, José Hernández Cano, Juan González Moreno, José Molera, José Carrilero and José Toledo.

The exhibition opens tonight, at 8.30 pm, and can be visited until June 30 in the Hall of the City Hall.

"Never before has a space housed the works of the greatest masters of Murcia sculpture of the twentieth century," said Mayor Jose Ballesta, who said that "this exceptional artistic synthesis is a unique opportunity to discover the talent of these great masters, whose legacy has made them universal ambassadors of our land and the culture of Murcia ".

It is an exhibition with more than fifty sculptures of different styles and materials such as marble, stone and bronze, which share the greatness of their origin: the prodigious hands of the most important Murcian sculptors of our recent history.

A unique sample that concentrates the contributions of these artists to the culture and history of Murcia.

These Murcia artists are heirs of a tradition enriched by figuration and a creative vision around the human figure.

Some of the 56 works that are exhibited reflect the most important moments of their authors, while others are authentic unknown pieces, because they belong to private collections or because they are found in other official spaces.

The teachers of a generation: Planes and González Moreno

Planes and González Moreno were the masters who paved and showed the difficult path of the sculptural creation of the following generations.

José Planes (1891-1974) lived his artistic interests and his training period with the painters Joaquín, Pedro Flores, Garay and the young Ramón Gaya in a Murcia.

He went to Madrid in 1918 -where he developed his entire career and his work acquired national and international prestige-, however, he kept his house and studio on the "Graná" Path.

On the other hand, Juan González Moreno (1908-1996) was in Murcia the maximum representative of the arts for many years.

Almost all the commissions and official art went through his advice.

The sculptors of our city received their teachings directly.

He recovered the forms and educated in the sculpture the generations that preceded him.

Both were two masters who with their work and their teachings formed a model generation in their land and incomparable with others of the Spanish regions.

A generation that followed the path of figuration in a land rich in sediments and illuminated by a radiant sun that is projected in the intense Mediterranean blue, a sea that ceases to be a geographical feature to become a cultural concept.

Plans and González Moreno paved and showed the difficult path of the sculptural creation of the following generations.

Book of Martín Páez

To the exhibition must be added the book that, with the same title, 'Murcia: a generation of sculptors', has written Martín Páez Burruezo, an essential reading to understand the work, the legacy and the influence of this great generation of Murcian sculptors .
