Murcia counts today with five new Favorite Sons.
The municipal plenary session unanimously approved all the municipal political groups to grant this recognition to the sculptor Francisco Salzillo, the cyclist Alejandro Valverde, the painter José María Falgas, the former president of the Autonomous Community Andrés Hernández Ros and the businessman Ángel Belmonte.
In this way, the city pays tribute and makes a public recognition of the famous Spanish artist Francisco Salzillo y Alcaraz, whose name is deeply linked with the Holy Week in Murcia and, in particular, with the procession of Good Friday, pending recognition by Unesco as Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Also, and after unanimously approved by the Corporation, the City Council has recognized the link of the cyclist Alejandro Valverde with the municipality of Murcia, where he was born on April 25, 1980. Since his debut as a professional in 2002, has always been an example of sportsmanship , improvement and team awareness.
Throughout these years, Valverde has been the ambassador of Murcia, since his land has always been present in every title, interview or event of which he has been the protagonist.
The agreement has also been unanimous for the painter José María Falgas Rigal to receive his distinction as the Favorite Son of Murcia.
Born in 1929 in the popular street of San Antonio, since he painted his first oil painting in 1945, he has been an ambassador of his land, which he has masterfully reproduced in oils and watercolors, which has placed him as one of Murcia's artists most recognized of the XX and XXI century.
Andrés Hernández Ros, was born in 1948 in the hamlet of La Galapacha, belonging to the district of Guadalupe.
Deceased in 2016, he was the promoter of the Murcia Statute of Autonomy and regional head of government between 1982 and 1984.
With regard to Angel Belmonte, the City of Murcia recognizes its connection and disinterested collaboration in the celebrations of the municipality and its impetus in the Christmas celebrations around the figure of Santa Claus, which has represented for years.
He has also collaborated with the Federation of Moors and Christians, contributing material and playing the role of Ambassador Moro, as well as having founded the Kábila Ibn-Arabien 1983.
