On March 15, the VI Cinefórum session took place, 'La ciencia en la gran pantalla,' with the German film 'La Ola' and the professor from the University of Murcia Juan José García Escribano.
This initiative is part of the projects of the Scientific Culture Unit of the UMU to bring science closer to society.
The film tells an experiment conducted in 1967 in California, where a professor seeks to explain the operation of a totalitarian regime.
The goal was to understand fascism through a 'game' in which students assumed ideas about discipline and feelings of community.
For the teacher the film invites reflection: "it shows the ease with which a skilled leader can handle the masses and reveals the mechanisms of manipulation".
Likewise, the researcher verified the dangers that the seduction capacity of a charismatic leader generates, in this case a professor whose "fascination capacity, in short, that can turn into sinister dictatorship until the most accredited of the democracies".
In addition, García Escribano illustrated the conditions for totalitarianism to happen and if they could resurface.
The expert remarked that there is an era of democratic disaffection, distrust and emptiness, where the radical right-wing movements are making progress.
Therefore, the sociologist claims that "it is necessary to put back at the center of our analysis the role of education in the task of forming free and critical citizens."
