The Faculty of Economics dedicates a round table to 'Women in the company' (12/03/2018)

The Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Murcia celebrated, on the occasion of the events related to Women's Day, a panel dedicated to 'Women in the company: gender and equal opportunities'.

The speakers at the table were Manuela Marín, president of the Association of Women Entrepreneurs (OMEP);

María López Martínez, secretary of the Department of Applied Economics specialized in the labor market;

Ana Jiménez-Alfaro, lawyer, researcher in the chair of CSR of the UMU and consultant in equality plans;

Natalia Márquez Martín, Corporate Manager at Pramac Ibérica and amateur writer;

and Raquel Rubio, director of Gorfactory SA, Roly Brand.

In the course of the table Manuela Marín made reference to the difficulties of undertaking, which increase in the case of women.

In particular, he highlighted the difficulty of reconciling work and family life.

In this regard, he explained to those present the work done by OMEP to implement European working hours, from 8 in the morning to 6 in the afternoon.

María López devoted her speech to comment on the progress made in equality issues since the approval in 1978 of article 14 of the Spanish Constitution that recognizes such equality.

Despite the way traveled, Lopez stressed that "statistics indicate that differences persist and endure."

As an example, she highlighted the percentage of women who work in lower-wage sectors while they are underrepresented in decision-making positions.

Natalia Márquez, meanwhile, highlighted the effort made by the company in Human Resources supporting reconciliation, establishing flexible hours and eliminating the wage gap.

He ended his speech affirming: "We do not have to live in the paradigm of the excuse, we put the roof ourselves."

Ana Jiménez-Alfaro, an expert on equality plans, described them as "a management system that guarantees equal opportunities."

As he explained, these plans are not protective measures or assistance, but incorporate measures such as protocols against harassment or sexist use of language, among other things.

Finally, Raquel Rubio, International Head of Marketing and Communication at Gorfactory, spoke about the glass ceiling, emphasizing the historical advantage of men in the labor and education markets.

Another aspect that stood out is maternity, which becomes the main obstacle for women to reach managerial positions since, as she pointed out, the role of motherhood rests with women.
