New findings to treat psoriasis through the intestinal flora (28/02/2018)

The results published by the Scientific Report of the Nature Group, together with those recently contributed to the National Congress of Microbiota and Probiotics, show that treatment with a probiotic, together with the usual therapy of this disease, improves important, both prognosis and the patient's response.

This has been highlighted by the group of researchers among which is Dr. Vicente Navarro López, Principal Investigator of the MiBioPath Group and director of the Chair of Infectious Diseases and Human Microbiota of the UCAM, together with the doctors Ana Ramírez Boscá ( Professor of Dermatology at the UCAM), Beatriz Ruzafa Costas, Mariano Guerrero, Francisco Horga (University of Alicante), Asunción Martínez (Dermatological and Aesthetic Center of Alicante), Daniel Ramón, Empar Chenoll and Salvador Genovés (Biopolis), Francisco Codoñer (Lifesequencing ) and José Manuel Pérez Orquín (Korott).

So far no research group has shown that the intestinal microbiota of patients with psoriasis presents differential data with that of the healthy population and with that of patients of any known disease.

This finding opens a new field of research to act on the microbiota as a new therapeutic target in these patients.

The results obtained by the research group on the treatment of psoriasis modifying the gut microbiota open an important field of study to evaluate what factors of the gut microbiota may be influencing the appearance and subsequent evolution of psoriasis.

In this research published today by Scientific Reports, it is one of the findings of the research group, which has recently demonstrated the efficacy of a specific mixture of functional probiotics for the treatment of Atopic Dermatitis;

product that has recently been marketed by a German multinational in our country.

The published data open the door not only to new models of treatment, but also to diagnosis;

since identifying the factors of the microbiota that participate in the appearance and evolution of psoriasis can serve to prevent their appearance and / or intervene early in the event of the appearance of new outbreaks of the disease.

Soon to be published the results obtained in terms of intervention, communication that has recently been awarded at the National Congress of Probiotics and Microbiota, held in Zaragoza, as "the best clinical intervention work." In the coming months we will be able to know how the evolution of psoriasis after treatment with a mixture of specific and functional probiotics.

This research work has been carried out thanks to public-private collaboration pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology, universities and clinical centers.

Among them: the San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia, the University Hospital of Vinalopó, the Aesthetic Dermatological Center of Alicante, the Pharmaceutical Company Korott SL, the Biotechnology Company Biopolis SL and the Spin off of the Scientific Park of Alicante Bioithas SL.

All of them are involved in other research projects aimed at identifying those peculiarities of the microbiota of these patients that serve to identify the subjects with greater risk of suffering severe symptoms or relapses of the disease;

which, in addition, would help to intervene early in the same.
