The renovation of the Old Prison will bring with it its conversion as a socio-cultural space of the municipality looking to turn it into a regional reference.

The Committee of Cultural Experts, whose members have held their second meeting this morning and visited the Old Prison this morning, will be in charge of this, accompanied by Mayor José Ballesta and the Councilor for Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesús Pacheco, with the In order to know first hand the possibilities offered by the property.

During the meeting the suggestions to the architectural proposal, the contributions to the adaptation of the urban environment, the analysis of the management model and the schedule of actions were studied.

"The project of the Old Prison, like others that are turning Murcia into a big city, seeks that the Murcians recover a space that is theirs and that it adapts to all their concerns and ages.

It will be a complex designed to open up to the city, with a projection of the future and which aspires to be one of the epicenters of the cultural and social activity of the municipality, "said Ballesta.

Thus, this committee is composed of Juan Pablo Soler, director of the Circus Theater;

Manuel Fernandez-Delgado, director of the Ramón Gaya Museum;

Enrique González and Miguel Ángel Centenero of the Academy of Fine Arts Santa María de la Arrixaca;

Javier Bernal, director of the Museum of Fine Arts of Murcia- Mubam;

Jesús de la Peńa, director of the Puertas de Castilla Cultural Center;

Jesús Pacheco, Councilor for Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs;

and Manuel Hernández from IH Arquitectos, winner of the preliminary project contest, as well as municipal technicians.

After knowing the main characteristics of the preliminary project and its contemplated generic uses, the Committee of Cultural Experts has been able to enter the Old Prison to know the different spaces and their possible cultural uses.

It corresponds now, in the drafting phase of the construction project, to this committee with the IH Architects team, to specify and detail not only the specific uses but also the management model of the future complex, fulfilling a double objective.

"On the one hand, that the new cultural center has an open, dynamic character and that it can become a space of coexistence and cultural and leisure reference and that, in addition, it is sustainable from the economic point of view, generating enough cultural value that allows him to be self-sufficient in terms of generating resources ", explained Ballesta.

Thus, a fundamental task of the Committee will be the study and proposal of precision of the global uses, its scope, extension, alternatives of cultural character and suitability on the location of the use of restoration-cafeteria as an element closely linked to the global cultural use.

Another essential aspect is the architectural configuration and suitability of the resulting spaces and aptitude for the formation of an annual planning of cultural activities.

In this way, the municipal Corporation will have the opinions and recommendations of various experts, with extensive experience in the management of centers and cultural spaces, to finish outlining the rehabilitation and putting into use of the emblematic building.

To this end, after the meeting today, the Committee of Experts will hold a second meeting, already presenting conclusions, in mid-March in order to present their proposals by the end of the same month.

Workplan

Predictably, the Governing Board next Friday will give the go-ahead for the negotiated procedure to contract the Basic Project, which will establish the homogeneity between the two phases: the first one that affects the head of the building, and the second one that includes the back of it.

The execution project of phase 1 will be tendered in summer so that the works can be contracted in September and so the recovery works of the Old Prison can begin before the end of this year.
