The elite of the world canoeing will measure its forces in the Segura on 17 and 18 February in the III Regatta Ciudad de Murcia (09/02/2018)

This competition of first level that hosts 'Murcia River' has the same category as the descent of Sella, the only two tests distinguished as 'special interest'.

Some 700 athletes from all over Spain will be thrown into the waters of the Segura, including international figures of the National Police such as Carlos Pérez Rial, four-time World Champion and Olympic Champion in Beijing 2008, or Antonio Campos, the Spanish canoeist with more medals in World Championships.

The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, the Councilor for Sports and Health, Felipe Coello, the head of the Training and Perfection Division of the National Police, José García Molina, the director of the newspaper La Verdad, Alberto Aguirre, and the technical director of the test, José Juan de León, presented today the Third Regatta Ciudad de Murcia, a massive sporting event in which some 700 athletes will meet in waters of Segura, next weekend of 17 and 18 February.

"The elite of international canoeing, Olympic and world champions will meet in this third edition of the Ciudad de Murcia Regatta, 35 years after we regained water sports in the Segura," said José Ballesta, who emphasized that "this competition national level that hosts 'Murcia River' has the same category as the descent of Sella, the only two tests distinguished as 'special interest' ".

"This year we will surpass the record of participation of the previous editions and we hope that some 700 athletes of all ages and arrivals from all over Spain will be thrown into the Segura waters," the mayor said, adding that "a few years ago we It would have seemed unthinkable to contemplate canoeists in the river.

Today we see them practically every day in the heart of the city, riding their K1 and C1 and defying the cold.

Canoeing joins other activities that welcome the environment of Murcia Rio as running, cycling, fishing, sailing or even the water sky.

With this new edition the river is consolidated as a first level sporting stage and Murcia is consolidated as one of the few Spanish capitals that has an urban and navigable river, which crosses the heart of the city, and which offers an exceptional track for the practice of water sports.

In addition, this sporting event will have a positive economic impact on the sector of hospitality and catering Murcia, since "hundreds of athletes will spend the night in the city on the occasion of the test," said the mayor.

The Regatta includes all categories, from fry to veterans, including, men, women and paralympic category: veterans, senior, sub23, junior, cadet, infant and juvenile K1 and C1.

The start, finish and delivery of trophies will take place in the Sports Center Murcia Park.

The test in which the City Council, La Verdad, the Community, the Federation of Canoeing Region of Murcia and Murcia Remo Club, will be held on Saturday 17 from 9.00 to 17.30 and Sunday 18 from 09.00 to 14.30.

The dragon boats will once again put the finishing touches to the race on Sunday, at 1:00 pm, with a spectacular final.

The test can be seen throughout the urban stretch of the river as it passes through the center of the city.

Municipal School of Canoeing

The day before the competition, on Friday the 16th, the environment of the river will warm up with the presentation of the Municipal Children's School of Canoeing.

Dozens of schoolchildren will take the boats to the river and will make a demonstration of this sport to which the Club Murcia Remo is giving an important boost in the municipality, with the collaboration of the City Council.

The list of professionals of the National Police

It is expected that nearly 700 athletes from all over Spain will be thrown into Segura waters on the weekend of February 17 and 18.

Among them, 16 professionals from the National Police stand out, who have an outstanding national and international sports record, such as Carlos Pérez Rial, four-time World Champion and Olympic Champion in Beijing 2008, a title he won along with policeman Saúl Craviotto, four-time medalist Olympic.

Within the Sports Association of the National Police, also stand out the following proper names of this sport:

Javier Hernanz.

Olympic canoeist in Athens and Rio de Janeiro, games in which he achieved a historic milestone for the National Team, achieving for the first time in history to qualify in a final to a Spanish boat of K4 in the 1000 meter test, achieving an Olympic diploma.

Antonio Campos.

He holds the record of "Spanish canoeist with more medals in World Championships", with a total of 16, to which adds another 6 medals in European Championships, and more than 40 titles of Champion of Spain.

Álvaro Fernández Fuiza.

Winner of the last eight editions of the Sella International Descent, and medalist in 7 World Championships, 5 European Championships and 20 Spanish Championships with 14 golds, 5 silvers and 1 bronze.

Óscar Graña.

It holds the Spanish canoeing record with the most international medals with a total of 21 medals, 12 in World Championships and 9 in European Championships.

Counting also with 11 titles of champion of Spain in the Modality of Marathon.

Daniel S. Viloria.

First Spanish athlete to achieve a victory in an ICF World Cup in 2015, a feat he repeated in 2017. A historical result for national canoeing that places Spain as a world reference in Kayak de Mar, a modality dominated for years by South African and Australian sportsmen .
