The citizen consultation supports the recovery plan of San Esteban as a tourist attraction and a motor of culture (02/02/2018)

Both the interpretation center and the garden are configured as spaces with capacity to host public activities, institutional presentations, shows, exhibitions, workshops, conferences and workshops of academic and educational scope.

The Governing Board sends the Master Plan to the committee of experts to make suggestions before its final approval.

The Governing Board today approved the Master Plan for the San Esteban Ensemble, which will be sent for consideration by the expert committee.

Likewise, the opinion of the General Directorate of Cultural Assets will be necessary.

In this way, a further step is taken in the complex recovery process of the San Esteban Complex.

The proposal prepared by the UTE responsible for the drafting of the plan contains all the relevant aspects in this action, such as the archaeological research and action programs;

restoration and consolidation of heritage assets;

of maintenance and conservation;

of interpretation and dissemination of heritage;

economic and financial plan;

and of uses, services and activities.

normativa de aplicación, el estudio de mercado, un análisis de las debilidades, amenazas, fortalezas y oportunidades de negocio, y las conclusiones de la fase de consultas ciudadanas.

application regulations, market research, an analysis of weaknesses, threats, strengths and business opportunities, and the conclusions of the citizen consultation phase.

The proposal has been the result of citizen participation, whose opinion has been taken into account for decision making.

The consultation has been carried out in two ways: to entities and associations, with open questions about their CSE vision and future proposals;

and citizen participation, through a questionnaire to neighbors, merchants of the area, communities of owners, associations, etc.

Among the first, is the Alfonso X El Sabio Academy, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Santa María de la Arrixaca, the Compañía de Jesús, the School of Arab Studies of Granada, the Spanish Association of Medieval Archeology, Hispania Nostra and various departments of faculties and schools of the UMU, UCAM, UPCT and UNED, Spanish Federation of Associations of Archivists, Librarians, Archaeologists, Museologists and Documentalists, Association of Friends of San Esteban, Citizen Platform in Defense of San Esteban, associations of merchants, chroniclers , etc.

Likewise, 261 queries have been made to citizens "at the foot of the street" and to neighbors, who show a similar result because they consider that one of the most beneficial proposals for the San Esteban Ensemble is that a passable square be built, with universal mobility for all people, together with green spaces and shade, on top of a museum that preserves the archaeological remains.

Most prefer this possibility because of the importance they have for the history of Murcia and for the benefits they bring to the city, and they bet on the possibility that both the palace and the Church could be visited and hosted exhibition halls.

A lower intensity of traffic in the adjacent streets, less surface garbage containers and, therefore, less noise, are other aspects valued by the citizens consulted.

Regarding a future museum with the remains, the people consulted point out that it would be a powerful tourist attraction for being located in a privileged area of the city and becoming a symbol for Murcia and the beginning of guided routes, activities, congresses and events in the city.

The San Esteban Ensemble is called to be a focal point of cultural, tourist and leisure attractions.

Therefore, both the interpretation center and the garden are considered as spaces with capacity to host events of different nature, from public activities, institutional presentations, shows, exhibitions, workshops, conferences, etc.

This is configured as a scenario prone to collect acts of all kinds: institutional presentations, seasonal shows, Murcia Tres Culturas, music, dance and open air theater, Ibn-Arabí film festival, temporary exhibitions, food fairs, street markets, etc.

Also academic workshops will be organized as 'Archaeologist for a day', 'Mudéjar revolt', 'The splendor of Murcia', 'Our garden', 'Workshop Ibn Razin', 'Fashion workshop' or 'Workshop Ibn Arabí' and open workshops, such as 'Create the story', 'Learn your only music' or 'I want to be an artisan'.

And varied events, among them, 'Festival of the letters Ibn Arabí', 'Cinema cycle', 'Traveling exhibitions', 'Medieval market' and 'Other events'.

The CSE will have a heritage interpretation and dissemination plan whose objective will be to create links from school age.

Regarding the research strategies proposed, we bet on different lines of work, such as the evolution of the plot before, during and after the foundation of the suburb and its relationship with the immediate environment.

In this sense, there will be a management body or historical-archaeological laboratory of the Medieval Murcia, which coordinates the authorizations of the works in the protection zones of the archaeological site of Murcia, as well as in the sites that make up the patrimonial catalog of the municipality , whose chronology, partial or total, is of this historical period.
