The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, along with former mayors of the municipality and members of the Municipal Corporation, opened this afternoon the new Corregidores Hall of the City Council, with the exhibition 'From Arenal to La Glorieta: Homage to our Corregidores and Mayors 1394- 2015 '.
José Ballesta pointed out that "the Chamber of Corregidores and Mayors is a tribute to the political history of the municipality, through the public representatives who have incarnated the local authority for the last 620 years" and said that "today we publicly open this space with a exhibition of high testimonial value that collects images and official documents centenaries that have written the history of our people.
The exhibition consists of 17 photographs covering a period from 1871 to 1927, with images such as the different dependencies of the Town Hall, the Plenary Hall, the Paseo del Arenal, official acts, etc.
The oldest ones are those of the facade of the Town Hall, the work of J. Laurent, eminent French photographer who visited Murcia in 1871 - they are the oldest known images of the municipal building since the work was completed in the mid-nineteenth century, according to the project of Juan José Belmonte-.
The exhibition includes a copy of the work of Jerónimo Castillo de Bovadilla 'Politics for corregidores and gentlemen vassals in time of peace and war', the most exhaustive and doctrinal work on corregidores, of fundamental consultation for the clerk's office of the City Council.
The issue that is presented in the exhibition is the printed edition in Antwerp in 1704.
261 corregidores and mayors
For the first time a room allows to contemplate in a historical tour the totality of municipal representatives who have passed through the city throughout its history: from the corregidores, initial representatives of the royal power, to the current public officials who preside and represent the municipality , the mayors.
In the municipality of Murcia there are documented a total of 261 corregidores and mayors from 1394 to the present day.
Corregidores were a total of 124 and, from the 19th century, in 1820, the appointment of mayors began, counting our city with 137 to this day.
The names of each and every one of them have been engraved on the natural wood slats that decorate the upper perimeter of the Hall.
The new space, which has an area of 270m2, has been designed with a double purpose: as a prelude to the Plenary Hall, so it is designed as a place for official receptions and, on the other hand, to display new samples on its walls of historical interest and municipal relevance.
The list of Corregidores is the result of the investigation carried out by the municipal archivist in the Chapter Acts (1364-2015) and the series of Royal Carduaries (1314-1855), while the list of mayors was obtained from the publications made by José Can Benavente in two volumes and Clemente Garcia's recently published book.
