Murcia fights cancer by giving voice to patients and making visible the hidden problems of the disease (29/01/2018)

José Ballesta and the vice president of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) - Murcia, Manuel Molina Boix, present the campaign 'February 4: World Day Against Cancer'.

The Forum 'The non-visible problems of people with cancer and their families', shed light on non-visible needs of patients, such as the economic, social or occupational impact of the disease.

This coming Sunday, World Cancer Day, three neuralgic points of the city - the Moneo, the Manterola catwalk and the Aguas de Murcia building - will light up green, to honor the people who confront him.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the vice president of the Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC) - Murcia, Manuel Molina Boix, today presented the campaign 'February 4: World Day Against Cancer', which aims to give voice to patients and their families, under the motto 'We give the face for you', to make visible the hidden problems of the disease, as well as to support prevention and research.

The AECC, which will also take advantage of publicizing the accompanying services to patients and their families, has prepared a program of activities that will begin tomorrow and will culminate on Sunday, February 4, coinciding with the celebration of World Cancer Day.

José Ballesta said that "when someone has cancer, the whole family suffers with it.

We know that this disease affects us all, whether you are a child, a mother, a sister, a friend, a partner, a doctor or a patient.

That is why cancer can not be synonymous with a solitary and silent struggle, but must be synonymous with support, strength, and unity, which are the values ​​that the Spanish Association against Cancer of Murcia, the leading institution in the fight against this sickness".

The presentation press conference was also attended by the Councilor for Sports and Health, Felipe Coello, the social worker and labor counselor of the AECC Murcia, Marina Costa, and the Communication and Marketing Coordinator of the AECC Murcia, Francisco Díaz.

Forum Against Cancer and mosaic 'You have us here'

The acts start tomorrow with the distribution of book dividers with phrases of hope and motivation that the AECC has compiled through Facebook, through the initiative 'Words of life'.

On Wednesday the 31st, in the Hall of Mirrors of the Romea Theater, at 6:00 p.m., the III Forum against Cancer will be held: 'The non-visible problems of people with cancer and their families', in which six professionals will participate ( social workers, labor specialists, doctors and volunteers), which will give visibility to the hidden needs of patients suffering from the disease, such as economic, social or employment impact.

Once the Forum is over, at 8:00 p.m., the Romea square will house the mosaic "We have you here", a composition in the form of a locator or inverted teardrop made with 100 green cards, which symbolizes the union in the struggle against disease.

The entire process -from training, the writing of support phrases on the cards and the assembly of the symbol- will be recorded in a video to be published on World Cancer Day.

On February 4, World Cancer Day, three neuralgic points of the city of Murcia, such as the Moneo building, the Aguas de Murcia building (former Caravaca railway station in Murcia) and the Manterola walkway, will light up in color green at dusk, to honor the people who face the disease.

This act will be held in the main cities of Spain, throwing light symbolically on the not so visible problems that patients and family members suffer as a result of the disease.

In Murcia, 20 cases are diagnosed per day

In Murcia, more than 7,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in 2015, about 20 per day, with more than 60,000 family members involved in the problem of diagnosis and treatment, increasing the number of people who will need help to cope with the oncological disease.

During 2016 these figures have increased more than expected and the causes that oncologists consider are the increase in alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity and sedentary lifestyle.

The AECC in the Region of Murcia has attended during the year 2017, through programs of support and accompaniment to the sick person and their families, more than 2,000 cases, increasing the funding of these programs.

It has a psychological team that helps patients and families to cope with this disease, which was increased with a new Social Worker and a new Psychologist in 2017. This program has hospital volunteering in La Arrixaca de Murcia and Santa Lucia de Cartagena.

In addition, it has volunteering at home and testimonial volunteering to support cancer patients.

In 2017, within its awareness and prevention program, more than 20 conferences and a series of free workshops have been held to promote healthy living habits and improve the patient's life.

In addition, more than 40,000 mammograms have been performed on women in the region, 38,000, by the breast cancer prevention program of the Ministry of Health, with the AECC also being one of the architects of the creation of the colon cancer prevention program. .

In the Region of Murcia, the AECC has modern facilities at Calle Miguel Vivancos, nº 5, and with more than 80 local boards spread throughout the regional geography.

It has more than 1,000 volunteers and 7,000 members.
