The City of Murcia subsidizes with € 19,013 the project "Improving access to water and sanitation and associated practices in primary schools in Guinea Bissau" (27/01/2018)

The City of Murcia, thanks to its allocation for Development Cooperation, has collaborated with UNICEF in the development of the project to improve water access and sanitation in elementary schools in the Guinean Region of Bafatá.

In this way, the project contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals, through access to drinking water and sanitation services.

In rural Guinea Bissau, 44% of the population consumes water from unsafe sources, and 43% do not have access to sanitation facilities.

In regions such as Bafata, where the present proposal is presented, the indicators are even worse.

Children from poor families in this region are deprived of their right to water and sanitation, which also affects their right to health, suffering frequent episodes of diarrhea and their right to education, since the lack of water and clean latrines reduces, especially in girls, school attendance.

In recent years, UNICEF has equipped 200 schools in the country with water and sanitation systems.

With this project, 10 more schools will be covered, benefiting 1,691 children.

Within the framework of the project, in coordination with the Department headed by Rebeca Pérez, and with a great involvement of the children themselves, the teaching staff and the communities, they have implemented water supply systems, latrine blocks in the schools separate for boys and girls, sinks to promote hand washing at key moments and thus prevent the transmission of diseases.

Thanks to these works, 10 primary schools have safe water sources and adequate sanitation facilities that allow safe hygiene practices.

In addition, hygiene habits at school and in the family that improve health (prevention of water-related diseases) and schooling of children, especially girls, have been adopted in a sustainable manner.

Finally, given the needs identified and the process of defining the design of the infrastructures, the preparation of the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene strategy in schools was continued, which includes the following components:

- Development of the Three Stars Approach for Guinea Bissau.

- Support the data monitoring system in schools.

- Include the Menstrual Hygiene Management component in the intervention.

- Support the development of the National Quality Standards for schools.
