The UCAM leads the program to improve the employability of European athletes (22/01/2018)

The project is launched on Tuesday at the Campus of Los Jerónimos and will last for thirty months

The UCAM leads the international project, co-funded by the European Union, 'European Sport Leadership Program European Sports Leadership Program' (ESLP), which will involve more than twenty researchers from five countries and represents a new advance for the Catholic University in its bet for excellence in the dual career, which implies successfully combining academic and sports careers.

To achieve this goal, the project proposes to develop and implement a program that has real impact on current relations between employers and universities, disseminate their benefits to organizations with an interest in employing students and, at the same time, improve their activity habits physical.

Four other European universities are participating along with UCAM: Panepistimio Thessalias (Greece), Universita Degli Studi Di Roma Foro Italico (Italy), Pamukkale Ãœniversitesi (Turkey) and Universita Ta Malta (Malta).

This project, which will be managed and supervised by the International Projects Office of the UCAM (OPRI) during the thirty months, begins this Tuesday with the inaugural meeting at the Los Jerónimos campus of the San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia.

This program gives continuity to the international project ESTPORT that the UCAM led during two and a half years and whose main objective was to implement the dual career.

After the success achieved, the new partners of Pamukkale Ãœniversitesi (Turkey) join this project that will focus on the most suitable training for the job search of elite athletes for their special needs with respect to full-time students.

The ESLP Project will materialize through the Research Group 'Areté: Physical Education, Sport and Performance', formed by the dean of the Faculty of Sports, Antonio Sánchez Pato, and the researchers José Luis Arias-Estero, Elena Conde Pascual, Alejandro Leiva Arcas and Lourdes Meroño García.

It should be noted that with this new project, there are already seven awarded and developed by the School of Sports of the UCAM.

The value of the experience of the 'University of Sports'

It is no coincidence that the UCAM leads consecutively two European projects whose common denominator is the training of elite athletes.

In the last twenty years, the Catholic University has been developing and improving a model inspired by the university sport of the United States and that has as objective that the athlete can study without giving up his sports career.

The walker Juanma Molina was the first of many.

He developed a successful career as an athlete (world and European medalist and diploma in Olympic Games) while graduating in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences and later completing his training with a master's and doctorate.

That first step with Juanma Molina was the beginning of a project that today allows the study of dozens of elite athletes, who are studying undergraduate studies, such as the swimmer Mireia Belmonte (Publicity and Public Relations), postgraduate courses, such as makes weight thrower Úrsula Ruiz (High Sports Performance) or even the doctorate, which is immersed taekwondo Joel González, double Olympic medalist.
