Change Murcia asks the City Council to position itself against fracking (20/01/2018)

Cambiemos Murcia has presented a motion to the Plenary next Thursday for the City Council to require the Autonomous Community to prohibit the use of the technique of hydraulic fracturing, known as fracking, as well as any other procedure used for research and future exploitation of deposits of unconventional hydrocarbons.

The initiative also proposes the "immediate stoppage" of exploration permits authorized in the Region of Murcia, in line with what was requested by the Plataforma Cuenca del Segura Libre de Fracking (PCSLF) to stop the three prospecting studies granted in this community autonomous and affecting the regions of the Northwest, Altiplano and Vega Alta.

Fracking is a technique to extract hydrocarbons, especially natural gas, accumulated in the pores of impermeable sedimentary rocks. For this purpose, hundreds of wells occupy large areas in which millions of liters of water mixed with chemicals are injected, many of them pollutants and dangerous, which allows to "burst" the rock and release trapped hydrocarbons with them.

Risks to health and the environment

Councilman of the municipal training Sergio Ramos has warned of the many consequences of fracking for health and the environment, among which are the chemical contamination of aquifers and surface water, air pollution and increased seismic activity .

These risks, which have been highlighted by various institutions such as the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Safety of the European Parliament, have led some countries such as France, Bulgaria, Romania, the Czech Republic or some states of Germany and the United States, to the prohibition or the moratorium of fracking.
