The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the president of the Food Bank of Segura, Bonifacio Fernández, today presented the Murcia Matrona 2017 award to the Mercadona company, "for their generous collaboration over recent years, especially during the great collections ".
At the ceremony, the Food Bank's Silver Badges were also given to four volunteers from this solidarity organization.
The Food Bank of Segura (BASMUR) began its journey in 2009, with the aim of reducing social exclusion and help those most in need, as well as fight against hunger and use surplus food, taking advantage of perishable foods as resources solidarity.
In 2017 the Bank distributed a total of 2,000,000 kilos for some 28,850 beneficiaries.
With the Great Collection of the weekend of the past 1 and 2 December, the solidarity organization collected a total of 340,000 kilos.
During his speech, José Ballesta wanted to recall "that the Food Bank of Segura is one of those essential organizations in our municipality" and pointed out "the symbolism of the image of the Matrona de Murcia that presides over the facade of the Palacio del Almudí, with the values ​​recognized by the Food Bank: generosity and selfless delivery to those who need it the most ".
The event was also attended by the Councilor for Social Rights, Conchita Ruiz, the vice president of the Spanish Federation of the Food Bank, Juan Vicente Peral, the general secretary of the Ministry of Family and Equal Opportunities, Manuel Marcos Sánchez, and the regional director of Mercadona, Ana Belén Martínez.
