José Ballesta presents the promotional video 'Murcia, heritage of the Mediterranean', which shows a renewed and complete image of the historical and cultural heritage of the municipality, coinciding with the declaration of 2018 as the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Employment, Tourism and Culture, Jesus Pacheco, presented today at the International Tourism Fair 2018 (Fitur) the video 'Murcia, heritage of the Mediterranean', which shows a renewed and complete image of the historical and cultural heritage of the municipality, coinciding with the declaration of 2018 as the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
The City of Murcia is also strengthening family tourism in Fitur, following the line of action marked in the Tourism Operational Plan of the municipality.
Thus, various family and cultural tourism packages have been presented at the stand of the Region, including free tickets to museums and emblematic buildings for families visiting the municipality, guided tours of the city, the entrance to the Terra Natura park or a walk in boat on the river, also at no cost.
During tomorrow's Thursday in Fitur, it is planned to sign an agreement between Mayor José Ballesta and the president of RENFE - together with nine other municipalities, entities and institutions throughout Spain - based on the will to collaborate jointly with so that their common ends are strengthened and the activity "promote tourism in Murcia" and rail transport can be enhanced.
In this way, the agreement regulates the commitments assumed by both parties for the joint promotion of tourism in Murcia and Renfe Viajeros' transport services and lays the foundations for future actions, such as familiarization trips with journalists and travel agents, projection of promotional videos of the city on trains, custom seat headers.
Likewise and thanks to the aforementioned agreement, future visitors will have significant discounts (in some cases up to 35%) to reach Murcia, especially in the sector of congresses where more than 20,000 people can benefit from these offers, assuming they save more than 700,000 euros.
Balance of tourists of 2017
"The number of tourists in Murcia has registered a strong increase in 2017, reaching historical figures," said the mayor, who added that "pending the final figure of December, this past year we exceeded 450,000 tourists, comfortably exceeding 430,315 registered in the year 2016 ".
81% of these travelers come from the national territory, while the remaining 19% are of foreign origin, mostly from the United Kingdom and France.
In terms of overnight stays, in the absence of data for December, there are 680,600 registered, and it is expected that in the whole year exceed 730,000, breaking the barrier of seven hundred thousand, a figure never reached in Murcia.
These data show the importance of the municipality of Murcia within a sector as important as tourism in the total calculation of the Region.
In terms of the hotel occupancy of the city, the data for 2017 reflect the upward trend that the municipality is having in the last two years within the sector, having had an increase of 6'3% occupancy with respect to 2016 and more than 11% compared to 2015.
Likewise, hotel prices have also begun to follow the upward path of the rest of Spain and normalize, having had an increase of 4'1% over 2016 and almost 9% over 2015.
